...THE Venetian Palazzo...

Ok, for me this palace is IT.

The Palazzo Ducale (The Doge’s Plalace) is absolutely breathtaking in all its magnificence. It was constructed in 1309 and besides having been built as the home of the Doge, it also housed many of the Republic’s political institutions up until the Napoleonic occupation. By the sixteenth century, the Place was linked to the prison by the famous Bridge of Sighs (more on that in another post…). The palace faces the Venetian Lagoon and St. Mark’s Square.

Here are some beautiful pictures to give you but a glimpse of its grand beauty.

A true masterpiece! What beauty and grandeur! My goodness, you make me want to go there so badly! We should all do a blogger's European tour. Stopping off at some of these amazing places and meeting our favorite blogger's at the same time! How fun! This would be my first stop!

How I adore Venice! And love this post. I am just about to start Garry Wills' "Venice: Lion City" for research purposes. Of all the historical fiction you've read with Venice as the background, which have you enjoyed the most and would recommend for reading while researching?
Thanks for your input!

When am I ever going to get to Venice?!! I'm hoping it will be my next trip to Europe...combined with Vienna. And Paris Atelier is longing for new sites too!
Thanks for another terrific glimpse of Palace life.

Thank you Matterhorn!

What a wonderful idea Judith! A European Blog Tour- yes, why not?! Merci ma belle:)

Thank you so much Ms. K.- I've mostly read tons of REAL history books on Venice...but honestly, the ones that do stay with me the most truly are the fun histortical fiction...The Venetian Mask comes to mind- AND, I think spending every one of my childhood summers (up until I got married)-was where I learned the most useful history lessons ever:)

Catherine! We must all three take a trip there. I'd love to see more of Vienna too- I only visited once and for a brief 2 day visit...really not long enough to satisfy my artsy curiosity. Thanks:)

What beautiful photos. It is hard to believe that there can be so much beauty in one place.

Hi Ingrid:) There really is too much to see- there are so many different islands to visit and endless bridges (in such a small place:)

These photos are so beautiful!! I can't wait for the day that I get to see Venice and The Doge's Palace in person! Lucy, have you ever read City of Falling Angels by John Berendt? It's all about Venice and I think you'd really enjoy it even though it's more about modern day Venice. Check it out if you haven't already!
