Missing Paris...

Probably sounds strange that after almost three months of being back from a week long trip to Paris...I finally get to write a bit about it now. I’ve been hanging onto the lovely memories and the amazing things I saw and now I finally have some time to blog about it:)
We pretty much got up early every morning-map in hand- and off we went scouring through Paris and its surroundings. Amongst other things, I got to see Versailles- The private rooms (I took a Conference tour which was detailed to the max! And I loved every minute). Marie Antoinette’s Trianon was a dream (conference for that too).
Le Louvre was immense and non-ending (just like I remembered it). I revelled at my favourite works of art as my VERY patient husband was the perfect touring partner-if it weren’t for him I would have gotten lost most of the time!
And what about Josephine...Yes! I did visit Malmaison and loved the town as well. I ended that day with a special walk to la Petite Malmaison. I must admit that I was very welcomed by the Count himself who is now the owner of Josephine’s prior estate. A refreshing tea was served and a description of Josephine’s roses and the nurseries that she tended to was very informative.
We saw so much! I’ll be posting photos as I go along. Today I just wanted to give you a bit of a taste of what I enjoyed.

My BEST Read of the Year! Plus GIVEAWAY!!

2011 is soon coming to an end and here I am looking over some of the wonderful books I read this year…It’s been awhile though- or maybe years since I’ve actually picked a ‘favourite’ of the year. As you know I only review that which I love to read. And so, this past year I’ve read quite a bunch- but I let you in only on the very best books that I enjoyed very much.

Today though is different. I want to highlight my very FAVOURITE book for 2011! An absolute MUST READ- and if you’re thinking of what to ask Santa for Christmas…boy do I have a book for you!

Becoming Marie Antoinette, by Juliet Grey

Another take on Marie Antoinette, you say? Pardonnez-moi…but although I am a super duper fan of Marie Antoinette- This is in NO way just another book on the beloved martyred queen!

Captivating from the very beginning, BECOMING MARIE ANTOINETTE starts from when the young duchess was a young child. There is so much detail that this whole book tells only a third of what happens in her lifespan! (Hence the reason why it’s the first book in the trilogy- Yay!) The unraveling of this story is enchanting-Not one boring moment in this book. Grey is outstanding in not making it feel dry, diary-like, or repetitive of what we already might know.

I would describe this as seeing Marie Antoinette’s life through her own eyes...like watching a movie from within her person. The writing is impeccable and because I was so engulfed by the story, I almost forgot this was a novel. Are you kidding me?! This book is better than any of the history books out there on MA in terms of accuracy. I’m serious. Indeed the minute details pertaining to the history are impressive to say the least. It’s veritable, captivating and entertaining! Historians take note: You can actually quote from this. That’s how good it is.

In addition, I could not have imagined some of the scenes to be more real than this. Denoting the character of MA in such realistic nuances- for example her views on la Du Barry and the stance she takes with her! This was perfect development of character; reflective of her youth, logic, personality and morals. And there were so many funny moments as well; like the one where she notices a noblewoman in the palace hall, looking so snobbish and ‘etiquette-like’ -then all of a sudden the lady stops walking momentarily to… (gasp!) …I won’t spoil it for you!

There are also the tender moments that made me smile to see MA and Louis so real; truth is, the young are young no matter the era. MA is truly hopeful to please her husband and so longing for his love…and Louis, tender as well, often awkward- but a sensitive soul. Precious.

All the characters come to life through the eyes of Marie Antoinette. You see them as she did, at her age, through her own circumstances. As the story develops, the tender Marie Antoinette also evolves. Her opinions change and her ways take more maturity. Throughout though, her personality shines through crystal clear; Marie Antoinette is true to herself. That’s who she was. The more I read her story, the more I understood her and the more I loved her.

You must trust me completely on this- because honestly there is tons of material on MA out there. (And once you start reading up on her- let’s agree that fresh material on this grand queen is not exactly pouring from the heavens). Writing a refreshing and completely engaging novel on MA is a challenge in itself. Juliet Grey has risen to the occasion. Outstanding!

Spectacular in the details of every particular moment that resounds from history,

BECOMING MARIE ANTOINETTE is an exceptional read and my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE for 2011.

I look forward to its sequel; which I imagine the build up to what was an incredibly tragic life can only be that much more engaging to read…I can’t wait!

Loved, loved, loved BECOMING MARIE ANTOINETTE (I even carried it with me throughout Paris and right into the Versailles Palace!

As you can tell, blogging has not been the number one item on my agenda for a few months now...But- after taking care of important family stuff, re-aligning work schedules, kids' relocating and new schools...time flies! Amidst all this though, hubby and I did get away for a week in Paris! I will be posting some pictures very soon with a bit of story behind them.

To Be Queen, by Christy English

I don’t think I can refer to the great Aquitaine queen as simply Eleanor after reading Christy English’s fabulous novel, To Be Queen. ‘Aliénor’ was her real name and as much as this was a pleasant revelation to me (don’t you love the sound of her name), her personality also appeared refreshingly new to me as well.

Other books I’ve read based on this extraordinary queen usually portray her as (yes, definitely strong)- but also as conniving, consumed by lust, greedy and stopping at nothing to get her way...Well, in To Be Queen, you get a deeper and more amiable perspective of who Alienor might have been. I am now all the more fascinated by the Aquitaine queen after having read this book!

The story is about the young Alienor’s life all the way upto when she meets the dashing, young and exciting Henry II. It gives us a refreshing look at how she rose to become the grand queen in history as we all know. From a young age, Alienor was sharp and alert absorbing all that her father had to teach. I particularly enjoyed reading how she handled a specific scene involving her father’s mistress (you’ll have to read the book to enjoy this one;)...even as a young child she began to master her control of feelings and emotions for the grander cause of becoming ruler.

Her love of family is felt throughout- not only for her father, but especially for her young sister as well. Alienor was loyal to them always. After her father’s passing, Alienor now Ruler, was but a child raising herself and her sister. She literally barricaded herself from the world while awaiting marriage to Louis VII-lest any other man ravaged her to then claim her his own. Not surprisingly, Alienor was brilliant enough to accumulate loyal, strong and devoted followers that would fight till no end to protect her.

And what about the ‘insatiable’ side of this grand queen? Let me just say that after reading what she had to go through with her wimpy husband, Louis VII...I actually felt sorry for her most of the time! For Louis, needing an heir to France was the only reason for consenting to intimate encounters...other than that, a simple handshake would probably have brought on more physical warmth and pleasure!

I absolutely adored this book. Reading about Alienor in this light; where she is presented as a young, bright, loyal and fearless young girl to a woman who can hold her own- ready for a new passage into her life, was just perfect. All I’ve ever read about Alienor dealt with her brief marriage to Louis to then stress mostly on life with Henry- and her grandness as queen. But there’s not much out there about the ‘girl’ and how she became a woman and grand ruler in her own right. If you want to read about that, well this is the book for you. Now I’m ready for a part two by Christy English!

A fast read, fulfilling, true to the history and beautifully written. Excellent.

The Blighted Troth, by Mirella Patzer

Love against all odds- that’s definitely what Mirella Patzer’s historical novel, The Blighted Troth is mostly about. This treasure of a book is set in 17^th c. New France (yes a book set in my very own beloved Quebec!!) And I especially wanted to read it because of this. I know this history very well and was interested in seeing how it would be adapted into an historical fiction read- especially with the details of the time that I am very familiar with. I am happy to say that for me The Blighted Troth passed the test on all levels! The historical details are exact and true to the times and written accordingly so. What a treat for me!

Emilie and Robert, the main characters of this novel, are doomed from the very beginning. A wedding that should have taken place, is replaced by the couple being faced with obstacle after obstacle of the very worst kind; including abductions, threats, illness, treachery, deception, religious vows and so much more.

The story involves so many interesting characters that bring the setting to life. From locals (les habitants), tavern and inn keepers, tyrants and lords, aunts and nephews, priests and bishops, nuns, vow takers and a fille du roi, plus, plus, plus...a whole community to set the stage for this beautiful tale of love and endurance in the 17^th c.

Every one of the characters was specifically entwined into the plot; giving each their own specific role in bringing forth the story. Beautifully written with a touch of old history spirituality, true to Quebec’s Christian origin, made the story feel real and indeed very possible. I could so picture all of this happen! I was completely enthralled by Mirella Patzer’s story development.

For those of you who have read and enjoyed I Promessi Sposi- The Blighted Troth is based on this Italian classic (except much shorter and so much easier to read!) You will definitely enjoy the similarities of good vs evil in a battle where love conquers all.

Mirella Paltzer weaves a tale that brings you beyond your imagination. Everytime I thought I could predict the next scene, I was transported to yet another surprising twist. Beautifully written and historically detailed, The Blighted Troth is a book you will want to read.

Book Review: The Secret Diary of a Princess...

The Secret Diary of a Princess, by Melanie Clegg

Let me begin by saying that I am so glad Melanie Clegg (Erzibet) wrote this novel about the young Marie Antoinette. The reason I say this is because it’s not often that we get such a tender look at what lay at the basis of this martyred queen. Marie Antoinette is probably one of the most maligned queens in history and perhaps by looking into her young life we can get a better sense of what she was really all about.

Melanie Clegg’s novel is written (as the title suggests) in diary format and is a delight to read. From the very first page you get the sense of how genuine Maria Antonia (as she was then called) comes forth. There is such a tenderness, refreshing naiveté and true wanting to please in this young archduchess.

Her diary entries are filled with her love of family, her light mischievousness and free-spirited attitude. As you read this enchanting novel you sense how kind Maria Antonia genuinely was. She is always looking on the positive side and being hopeful for something better.

It is also refreshing to read about her in this light since it brings about a realization that the young royal was not brought up to be pompous, wanting and forever spoiled. Quite the contrary, Maria Antonia was seemingly raised for the ultimate sacrifice of self-Always doing for others, and as she was expected. This is probably something that is difficult to imagine for a member of the Hapsburg family and yet it was simplicity, obedience and piety that, for the greater part, shaped the young Maria Antonia.

Although I would classify this primarily as a YA novel, I am certain that both young and older can enjoy and revel in the dreaminess of this book. Notably, the historical details pertaining to both people and surroundings are impeccable.

Book Review and Giveaway of Finding Emilie!

Finding Emilie by Laurel Corona

Finding Emilie is a precious gem. I say this because rarely do I fall this much in love with a novel that is not totally the ‘true’ history. Laurel Corona’s book has added to the history by writing a story about ‘what might have been’ and created a novel that captivated me in all of its beauty and prose.

Based on the lives of both Emilie du Chatelet (Voltaire’s love) and (mostly) her daughter, Stanislas-Adelaide; known as Lili- the story takes you into the pre-Revolution time of the 18^th c. This was a time in France where women were not supposed to dabble in the sciences and other ‘higher’ learning subjects-let alone write.

Emilie’s death a few days after giving birth results in Lili being raised by Julie de Bercy (Emilie’s close friend). Julie's daughter, Delphine and Lili are raised like sisters. Lili however presents herself as quite trying and out of the ordinary in terms of all her questioning at the convent where she and Delphine were schooled.

Lili finds herself intrigued by her defunct mother and wants to find out more about her. Knowing that she resembles her not only physically, but also in spirit, Lili desperately wants answers for her own life through ‘finding Emilie’. This becomes a difficult task since her aunt is reluctant in sharing anything about Emilie’s remarkable life (she was the one who actually re-wrote Newton's work! Anonimously...one can only imagine how deep her understanding and knowledge of the material stretched)- But Lili is adamant about finding out the truth about her mother.

Unlike her despicable aunt, Julie is a constant and wonderful support for Lili as she blossoms into a great philosophical writer and lover of science. Lili does publish her work, but because this was a time where women’s brains were not something deserving of praise or recognition, she does this under a pen name.

I love that the author put this twist in history and added Lili’s life into it to give closure to what could have been a continuation to Emilie’s life. I almost bet you Emilie would have expected nothing less of this remarkably strong and intelligent daughter!

Before Versailles Review and GIVEAWAY!

The Karleen Koen’s TLC Book Tour

I especiallly love this period of French history and with Louis XIV as my absolute favourite king, it was easy for me to dive head first into Before Versailles. First of all let me say that the research in this book must have been of the most meticulous! The juicy parts and descriptions that entail mystery and kept me fascinated were impeccable in accuracy. I loved reading about palace life and the very details of day to day- the glamour, the splendour of this time- truly sweeps you off your feet. Koen is master at doing this in Before Versailles.

Having read loads of history on this fabulous king, I must say that such a detailed look at the period and events in his life (taking place over only a few months!)- was practically like having been there myself-true indulgence! So much detail (history buffs and lovers of all that is French will be in heaven:)

There is so much to this book; an iron-masked boy; mystery, intrigue and somewhat of a love triangle. About that- there’s just something I had a little trouble with; Henriette’s character portrayal. Let’s just say that I’m more used to reading about her kindness and some frivolity- yes of course...but for the most part she is the darling of this period. It's really her husband that history rather portrays as being the all-around awful one with a deceiving and warped mind along with kinky male preferences. So I had some adjusting to do when it came to reading of Henriette as a little on the scandalous side. But since the book is so well researched, I will attribute this all-time party girl portrayal on the fact that the story takes place in such a brief time span. I should also mention that there were most tender and very touching moments where I got teary more than once..

So, not only is this book an absolute extravaganza into French history in all of its glory, the other thing that is for sure; Before Versailles has made me fall in love with Louis XIV even more! Awhile back I read Koen’s: Dark Angels and was absolutely enthralled by it- Well- apparently Before Versailles is its prequel. So, if you can, try to read both of these (I’m going to reread Dark Angels again for sure!) Talk about a mega dose of delicious Louis XIV.

Book Review and FANTASTIC GIVEAWAY...

Madame Tussaud, by Michelle Moran is a treasure of a book. For anyone interested in the behind the scenes look at the Revolution, this is the book to read! What better insight than sitting right in Marie Grosholtz (Madame Tussaud’s maiden name), uncle’s salon? So much plotting and up-to-the minute news took place here! Can you imagine that the ultimate tyrant Robespierre himself, as well as Marat and the like would get together right in her salon and discuss how to oust the king? Madame Tussaud is the juiciest piece of French Revolution historical I’ve read so far.

Leave it to the extremely talented Michelle Moran to create a delicious story by slicing a piece of history and serving it up for us to gobble up. Moran is brilliant (and if you've read Nefertiti, The Heretic Queen and Cleopatra- you just know what I'm talking about!). Nothing is missing in this history-filled page turner. We read about Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, her children, the king’s sister, Elizabeth, Rose Bertin and even Josephine (still known as Rose at the time) is part of this fantastic book! There are so many historical figures that appear- and not just as passer-bys- actual scenes that actually happened are vividly portrayed.

And of course Marie’s wax trade is at the forefront of this novel. Not only was Tussaud an expert in her field- a true artist- she also gave up alot for her career and family’s safety. There were times while reading where I could not fathom her courage amidst the cruelty and gruesome conditions...imagine the naturalness and beauty of an artist creating from the living- and then try to imagine Tussaud creating from death and horror (I can’t explain..you’ll have to read the book!). And this was never by choice. Poor Marie!

I was completely enveloped in this book. Written almost like a memoir, I felt every moment as though I were there. Excellent writing that keeps you enthralled until the very end. If you would love to know more about this exciting and indeed revolutionary period- Get Madame Tussaud, by Michelle Moran- You won’t regret it! Loved it!

Outrageous! Book Review: ROYAL PAINS, by Leslie Carroll

ROYAL PAINS: A Rogue's Gallery of Brats, Brutes, and Bad Seeds

Let me ask you something...how important is it for you to learn about historical figures when reading history? Are you one of those people who strictly wants timelines with just a mere mention of names- OR- do you mostly crave facts and details on people of the past? If you tend to lean on the latter, Leslie Carroll’s nonfiction books are perfect for you!

After finishing Royal Pains, I felt completely satiated- a definite history fill that I am still raving about. Royal Pains is history bliss for anyone wanting to know up to the very last detail on notorious historical figures. EXCEPT that this time Carroll focuses on the brutes of history.

Yep, Royal Pains is filled with royals that were decadent, unbelievably brutal, carnal and destructive in every way. Some parts were incredibly gruesome to read but nonetheless; this is the history. It’s still unbelievable to me that some of those brutal acts were either condoned or extremely difficult to prosecute! Although I was shocked to learn about some of these historical monsters, I have to admit that some of their behaviours were so astonishing that I had to keep on reading with the hope that they would have somehow redeemed themselves. But no! Brutes till the very end!

The absolute worst for me was Erzsebet (The blood countess). This woman from a young girl was Evil incarnated. I can’t possibly think of anyone (in any time in history!) that compares to her- an absolute monster! Catching up to her is the runner-up Mr. Cruel himself, Ivan The Terrible; he actually ties with Vlad the Impaler...Are you getting the picture here? Royal Pains had me in a trance. I’ve never read so much detailed history written this way-I was captured from the beginning!

And, for a bit of respite from the barbarians found in Royal Pains, the crème de la crème of narcissists are presented. Two of my favourites being: Lettice Knollys and Pauline Bonaparte...oh the joy! If these two didn’t make the cut for brutality, they certainly aced the part of blatantly immoral. Just when you think you’ve read all that there is to read on these ladies...surprise, surprise- there’s more! And then the list of 'bad seeds' goes on. (The ‘good old days’ does not apply here.).

Royal Pains is a fascinating read- a one-of-a kind history book that will feed you details by the ton. I love reading about historical figures but I can never get enough info on these. It’s not the case with Leslie Carroll’s books! This author knows her history and brings the characters to life as she tells their story. I’ve found her style to be just as captivating and true to the figures in all her nonfiction works: Royal Affairs, Notorious Royal Marriages and now, Royal Pains.

History’s people are Leslie Carroll’s expertise- She’s definitely my favourite historian author. Get the book- you’ll be SHOCKED.

Had enough of the Borgia’s yet?? After so many books out there, and now a TV series to complement...it almost seems like we’ve captured every angle of this outrageous family. But - Not so fast...Matthew Scarsbrook has put a twist to the story. When you think of Borgia, does the word “poison” ever come to mind? Hold that thought; Matthew Scarsbrook’s new novel is entitled:

POISON IN THE BLOOD, The Memoirs of Lucrezia Borgia

My Review

I didn’t know quite what to expect when I began reading Scarsbrook’s new novel: Poison in The Blood. How was this historical novel going to be any different from the one (by a different author) I just recently read on Lucrezia? Honestly, I often find it difficult to read same subject- character books, one right after the other. So, needless to say, my excitement was not that great- but, I was on for the ride.

Well, I couldn’t have been more surprised! Not only did I get a novel filled with more than the basic history as I know it (perfect timeframe, setting and figures) but this one is also a memoir. Written in the first person, Poison in the Blood brilliantly portrays Lucrezia’s smarts, her compassion, love, strength of character and wit; something that is not always easily achieved when writing in this perspective.

But really, the thing that I found most interesting in this novel was the poison twist. Historically, the Borgias have always been suspected of dabbling in this area- so why not a novel exposing this? Scarsbrook is brilliant in weaving a plot that ties fiction and history together. Granted, the ending (which I will not give away!) is different from the real history; nevertheless, it could have been quite plausible, with the outcome of Lucrezia definitely being a less-maligned historical heroine.

I particularly enjoyed scenes involving Lucrezia’s estranged mother, as well as the famous Machiavelli himself. These touches within the book brought Lucrezia to life for me. Her thoughts, emotions and actions made her so real that I began to empathize with her. Her father, the grand schemer of things was as brutal and conniving as we know. But, Cesare shows another side of his, as well (Though don’t get fooled he’s still bad!). Living such a twisted life, Lucrezia, who is usually portrayed as a pawn, was clever and strong in reversing her fate. And, that’s what I loved most.

Brilliantly crafted, Poison in the Blood is a quick and engaging read that does not feign its way through the history. Rather, it brings an element of ‘what if’ that is splendidly interpreted into something more than just plain history. Scarsbrook has re-invented the past in this work of fiction by bringing in suspense with a twist to create a book that is well worth reading.

Today's Giveaway will be on THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF LUCREZIA BORGIA

MY REVIEW

This huge book is an all-inclusive historical fest on Lucrezia Borgia, her family and her life. This one-of-a-kind work begins by whetting our appetite with historical facts and complementary timeline. At over 600 pages, The Life and Legend of Lucrezia Borgia is a fantastic non-fiction collection of research and texts written in such an interesting, yet historically accurate style. This biography indulges the reader with enticing detailed information that encompasses both facts and mundane curiosities about the lady herself-a pure treat for any lover of history!

Also part of this book is a complete section on Lucrezia Borgia with original documents and correspondence from her days, which I was delighted to read. It includes letters and book extracts that detail her life. These are divided in sections that tell all on her father, mother, her first home, her education, her betrothals...everything until her death! One document I particularly loved was the love letter from Pietro Bembo dated: Venice October 18, 1503.

Another fantastic historical book found within this great compilation is Pere Dumas’ THE BORGIAS- a whole 16 chapters filled with more detailed info on this notorious family. There is also a note at the beginning of this particular book stressing the violence it contains. Dumas really does not ‘mince’ his words. He wrote the history as gruesome as it was.

And-For anyone obsessed with Cesare Borgia’s history, Raphael Sabatini writes: The Life of Cesare Borgia. This is a full history, which includes the criticisms and opinions of the author as well. This historical book contains four books in itself and is a most complete work of history that includes every treachery and betrayal committed by this man and his clan. It's also part of this grand book!

For the encyclopedic purists at heart, the author has also included 2 sections from Encyclopedia Britannica, volume 4 on Lucrezia Borgia and Cesare Borgia.

And what would all this history be if it were only facts without a bit of drama displayed for all to watch in a sensational play? So, to entertain as well as inform, this wonderful compilation of works also includes the play (melodrama) by Felice Romani: Lucrezia Borgia- first interpretation given in 1833, in Milan.

This book has it all! Historical Buffs will revel in this treasure of information. I highly recommend it- I now feel like a Borgia expert! (Oh dear...I do mean that in a positively scholarly way!)

Lucrezia Borgia WEEK: Author Interview- Book Reviews and GIVEAWAYs!!!!!

Today begins the week here at Enchanted by Josephine with a fantastic Author Interview.

What if I were to tell you that I have come across a most talented new author who's written about that most outrageously decadent family-the Borgias; their full history like never written before...including a twist to the history involving poison? Wouldn't you want to learn more? Would you be interested in reading his work...duh??

Today I have the immense pleasure of introducing to you, Matthew G. Scarsbrook, author of Poison in The Blood; the Memoirs of Lucrezia Borgia - and The Life and Legend of Lucrezia Borgia .

Scarsbrook has agreed to answer some of my questions in today's interview. Please welcome this wonderful author!

1) A Canadian first, but a true expert on British history and culture - For this novel you’ve had to switch to Italian history (and the Borgias!) What was the fascination? Why the Borgias or this particular period in history-place?

Firstly, I love the renaissance era - it was such an exciting time, so full of new ideas, new confidence, creativity, color, danger and spectacle. After writing about the English renaissance,I was keen to explore this fascinating time in another country - and what better than Italy, the birthplace of the entire movement?

As for the Borgia family, they were simply the most dramatic set of individuals in a very dramatic time. Lucrezia's father, Pope Alexander VI, was notorious for keeping a herd of courtesan's roaming about the Vatican, and was rumored to dispatch many of his enemies with a custom-made poison called 'Cantarella'. Lucrezia's brother, Cesare Borgia, was a shrewd and merciless Captain-General of the Papal army, and served as the inspiration for Machiavelli's 'The Prince'. Even Lucrezia herself was said to possess a ring with a tiny poison capsule which she used to secretly empty venom into drinks at banquets. The reign of the Borgias was the most scandalous era in papal history, marked by constant wars, assassinations,
murder, unbridled extravagance, debauchery and allegations of incest. If that isn't the stuff of stories, then I don't know what is!

2) About Lucrezia...Do you think history in general was rather fair; or too hard on her? Please share with us one thing about Lucrezia that my readers might not know and would love to learn.

Although modern historians have tried to rehabilitate her reputation, I think history on the whole has treated Lucrezia fairly unjustly. She was once described as the 'greatest whore there ever was in Rome', and many artists and writers have portrayed her as a poisoner, an evil seductress, or a femme fatale. But I was interested in the fact that, despite living in the most scandalous era of papal history, very few people in her own time accused Lucrezia of any crimes. Her powerful father and her ruthless brother may have been guilty of assassinations, murder, and general debauchery, etc., but there is no historical evidence to link Lucrezia to the plots and killings attributed to her family. So, I was inspired by this lesser-told story about Lucrezia's life - the story of how a young, relatively powerless noblewoman gained the strength to break away from the clutches of her family and took control over her own life.

A lesser known fact about Lucrezia? Despite being less than 20 years of age, she was a capable leader and was given the governorship of several cities within papal control. And for a few short periods, while Pope Alexander VI was away from the city, she was even placed in charge of the Vatican. To this day, she is the only woman to officially preside over the Holy See!

3) It isn’t always typical for male authors to write in the female voice. What is your opinion and experience regarding this? (advantages - drawbacks if any?)

It may not be common, but there's certainly a long history of male authors writing as women, dating back to Daniel Defoe in the 17th century, to Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins in the 18th century, to modern authors like Nick Hornby and Kazuo Ishiguro. It's really not as difficult as many people might think. As individuals, we ultimately only know what it is like to be ourselves - I have no special, innate insight into what it is like to be another person, whether it's a man or a woman, a Pope or a peasant. But as an artist, it's my job to bring to life diverse characters, to use my imagination to sympathize and understand every character's point of view that I write. So, while I can't know what it's like to be another person, I can imagine myself as another person. Gustav Flaubert was once asked how he managed to write so well as a woman in 'Madame Bovary', and he simply replied "Madame Bovary, c'est moi" - ("Madame Bovary, it's me"). I think that answer is my own, too: I am Lucrezia Borgia, just as I am every other character in my novel.

4)What type of research was needed to write your book? How long did it take? The
challenges?

I love to do extensive research for my novels. Generally, I spend about 6 months researching and planning before I start to write. My novels are often based around dramatic historical figures, such as Christopher Marlowe or Lucrezia Borgia, so I need to thoroughly understand their lives before I can tackle them as fictional characters. After so much preparation, the initial writing of the story can then be very quick, usually only 3-4 months, with another few months of rewriting and polishing. I generally produce one novel a year, although this may speed up
when I start writing a series.

5)What is in your future writing plans? Shall we expect more historical novels from you?

I'm just about to start a new detective series. Unlike my previous work, this novel will have a contemporary setting, although it has an historical basis too: the story is inspired by one of the most notorious and perplexing unsolved murders in English legal history. I also have a very unique idea for the main detective and the general setting, but it's top secret for now. If I told you, I'd have to kill you... which is rather fitting for a murder mystery!

Marriage and Divorce, Roman-Style

There are plenty of things about ancient Rome that I'm very happy didn't make it into the modern era. Slavery, for example, or the mass slaughter of animals and people for public entertainment. But there are some things about ancient Rome that I wish had stuck around, and top on that list is Roman-style marriage and divorce.

This was a topic I spent a lot of time researching for my second novel Daughters of Rome. One of my heroines just happens to be the richest heiress in Rome (her grandfather is the ancient world equivalent of Warren Buffet) and her dowry is a prize that gets passed to a new husband every time there is a power change. Since Daughters of Rome takes place during the Year of Four Emperors, my poor heroine manages to clock up a total of five husbands by the age of twenty – and three of those weddings in the same year. She's pretty tired of weddings by the end of the book, and I can't blame her. But at least Roman weddings were more interesting than 21^st century ones.

There are some similarities. The Romans started the custom of wearing a plain wedding band on the fourth finger of the left hand, since popular superstition held that a vein was supposed to run from that finger to the heart. Romans also started the custom of getting hitched in June – they considered it lucky, since it was the month named after Juno, goddess of marriage. But Roman brides wore a red veil, which frankly I think is an improvement – no more standing in front of a mirror trying to decide which shade of white, off-white, cream, ivory, beige or biscuit makes you look the least sallow. Roman brides also made sure to part their hair on the wedding morning with the spear of a dead gladiator; a superstition that was supposed to ensure a happy marriage. A little gruesome, to be sure, but more interesting than “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

Roman wedding vows were simple; a recitation that began “Where you are Gaius, I am Gaia.” Much better than these dreadful personalized vows that start with “You are the rock in my stormy sea” and only get worse. The priest follows up with a sacrifice for good luck, a sow or maybe a goose. I'm not really in favor of dead animals, but at least it wouldn't put me to sleep the way the inevitable reading from Corinthians does. And after the wedding banquet, the bride gets to light the fire in her new home for the first time – and toss the wedding torch to the unmarried girls in the crowd; the one who catches it will be the next bride. If you're the bride and you want to really nail that one slacker bridesmaid, I'm betting you could do a lot more damage throwing a torch at her than a bouquet.

And we have a lot to learn from the Romans when it comes to divorce. In the modern era, divorce is expensive, painful, time-consuming, and exhausting. It involves not just emotional pain but legal offices, arbitrations, courtrooms, and the expensive services of someone sleazy named Sid who is trying to screw the biggest alimony payments possible out of your ex, whose sleazy lawyer Gino is trying to get full custody away from you. Divorce Roman-style was much easier: either husband or wife announced that they no longer wanted to be married, and moved out. You didn't even have to announce this to your spouse; more than one husband came home to an empty house with a note on the table: “Goodbye, thanks for the memories, and by the way I'll be sending a slave next week for the rest of my things.” You could also dissolve your marriage by marrying somebody else: if your husband came home to the news “Actually, he's my husband now” then there was nothing he could do about it. The law reasoned, with a certain simplicity, that if she married somebody else then she was no longer married to you, and that's an end to it. All he could do was fume – and give back, as also required by law, at least a portion of your dowry.

There were some down sides to this custom. Divorce and remarriage was so casual that even an average nobleman might go through five or six wives in the course of his lifetime. “Sanctity of marriage” was not an idea with much weight in ancient Rome; a rich girl like my heroine in Daughters of Rome could easily have three weddings in one year, each husband divorced in turn for a better option when power changed hands. But even if I did put the poor girl through three weddings, at least she didn't have to deal with subpoenas, alimony arbitration, custody battles, or anybody named Sid. A world where divorce is easy and divorce lawyers are non-existent? I'm for it. I'm sure Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Empress Josephine would agree with me.

I got married myself in the middle of writing this book, and a few Roman customs leaked over into my wedding. Nobody sacrificed a goat, and sadly I wasn't able to find a gladiator's spearhead to part my hair. But my husband and I exchanged iron rings instead of gold – Romans picked iron because it was enduring, considered a better symbol for the coming marriage than soft malleable gold.

And I wore red.

Book Review: DAUGHTERS OF ROME, by Kate Quinn

Daughters of Rome, by Kate Quinn,

Kate Quinn is on her way to becoming the best ‘All-That's-Ancient-Rome’ historical fiction writer ever. I loved reading her first book: Mistress of Rome- never read anything like it before-Fabulous (read that review here).

In this year’s novel, Daughters of Rome, Quinn brings us into the lives of the four 'Cornelias'. Patrician nobility at its best, the young women take us through a roller coaster of emotions as they live in splendour, grandeur as well as gruesome tragedy. Such young lives (the eldest is only in her early twenties!), yet the ‘Cornelias’ manage to master charioting, espionage, perpetual weddings and divorces, enthronements and coup d’etats- not to mention clandestine loves and rendez-vous...hmmm, all that within the governance of four emperors!

Quinn’s knack for crafting exciting novels on ancient Rome and making them the most fascinating read has to do with more than just her captivating characters but also with her detailed surroundings. I’m not talking about boring laid out sceneries- No- I’m talking about serving up a whole Roman feast to describe events that took place. For example, Daughters of Rome includes detailed menus that only an expert in Roman times can tell you about. Loads and loads of unimaginable delicacies of the finest cuisine were served (some of it certainly objectionable by our times!). Not only does this bring the mood to the setting; it also brings in the attitude and way of living of the ancient nobility. It also gives a flair of how this all adjusted depending on the Emperor in power.

Food and feasts are not all that are being lived through this novel. In Daughters of Rome we experience the Chariot races as well as blood baths and slayings. I could not however have survived a book filled only with these. In fact, these vivid scenes were but the setting in which the heroines were immersed. What I loved most about this book was the growth and change the Cornelias themselves experienced. They lived a full-circle life that brought them to a turnabout construed by their own will and determination; sometimes to their own demise. Not all was a ‘happily ever after’.

What can I say... if you’re going to read about Ancient Rome, you want absolute beauty and abundance to parallel the most decadent and horrid. Kate Quinn is master at creating this by truly bringing ancient history back to life and absorbing you right into it.

Loved it of course.

At the age of fifteen the precocious Pauline, twelve years her brother’s junior, had developed a raging crush on a much older man, the rakish Stanislaus Fréron, but Fréron already had a mistress who had given him two children, with another on the way, and Napoleon refused to allow his sister to wed him.

Not long after that, Pauline was caught canoodling with one of her brother’s officers, Adjutant General Victor Emmanuel Leclerc, in his mid-twenties, dashing, chiseled, and nicknamed “the blond Napoleon.” The real Napoleon, who was quite a prude when it came to other people’s sex lives, insisted that they marry.

They wed in 1797; and in April 1798 Pauline bore Leclerc a son. Napoleon chose the boy’s name, Dermide, after the hero in one of his favorite poems. In 1801 Leclerc was posted to Saint-Domingue to quash a slave revolt. He proved a valiant commander, but Pauline proved unfaithful. News of her libidinous antics reached her brother in Europe and she received a long-distance scolding; her behavior was becoming an embarrassment to him.

Leclerc died of Yellow Fever and although Pauline ostentatiously mourned him, she wasted little time in returning to her social whirl on the Continent. In 1803 she married the doltish Roman prince Camillo Borghese, becoming a genuine princess. It was a defining moment for her, the chance to flaunt her title, lording it over her other sisters. Having secretly wed Camillo before the date agreed upon with Napoleon, she angered him when she was announced as the Princess Borghese at one of his soirees. But he could not remain angry with her for long. In fact he was forever forgiving her transgressions of etiquette and her general rudeness, even to Josephine, because the pair of them shared a special bond.

Of her rivalry with Josephine, she always referred to Napoleon’s wife as “the old woman,” as Josephine was six years older than her husband. And little Dermide’s death in the summer of 1804 (as a consequence of Camillo’s brother’s neglect) had made Pauline even more self-centered. She initially refused to attend Napoleon’s coronation in December, 1804, primarily because she and her sisters were expected to act as train bearers for the detested Josephine as she was crowned empress. It was only after Dermide was laid to rest and one of her sisters sent her a sample of the latest fashion in court dresses (which was too delectably resplendent for Pauline to resist for very long), that she decided to put in an appearance at the coronation after all. She recast herself as Napoleon’s greatest supporter, averring, “He is my protector, he will defend me against the evil designs of my husband.”

The emperor was forever scolding Pauline about her promiscuity, but she laughed it off—even at peril to her health. She developed a disease of the fallopian tubes, which her doctors attributed to furor uterinis, or an overuse of her nether parts, and she often had to be carried about; but nothing curbed her oversize libido, which was very much like her older brother’s.

Josephine, too, considered her jealous sister-in-law a nymphomaniac—among other things. She’d harbored her suspicions about the nature of Pauline’s relationship with her husband for some time, but one evening at Malmaison during the winter of 1805-06, after a dinner among family members and friends, she approached one of her usual confidants, the philosopher Constantin-François Chassebœuf, Comte Volney, in tears, exclaiming that she was “wretched indeed. You don’t know what I have just seen,” she told the count, who was accustomed to offering the empress a shoulder to cry on whenever she discovered Napoleon’s latest marital infidelity. “The Emperor is a scoundrel,” she continued. “I have just caught him in Pauline’s arms. Do you hear! In his sister Pauline’s arms!”

As I mention in my chapter on Pauline in ROYAL PAINS: A Rogues Gallery of Brats, Brutes, and Bad Seeds (NAL: March, 2011), allegations of incest between Napoleon and Pauline were not entirely improbable. Josephine’s outburst to Comte Volney was not the first time she had expressed the view that her husband and his sister had an inappropriately intimate relationship. The American diplomat Gouverneur Morris had also heard the rumors, and characterized “the present Princess Borghese” as “a Messalina.” Messalina was the wife of the emperor Claudius who reputedly competed with a renowned prostitute to see who could bed more lovers in a single night. When confronted with Josephine’s suspicion via a third party, Pauline at first denied any such impropriety, insisting that “. . . the Empress was no better than she should be herself. At length she acknowledged it.”

Of course Pauline loved the limelight, and negative attention was still attention, but considering the size of her sexual appetite, which was even outmatched by Napoleon’s libido, an incestuous relationship between the siblings is certainly plausible, given their personalities. Pauline’s recent biographer, historian Flora Fraser, has arrived at the same conclusion, stating that “the truth is, it seems almost inevitable, given the strong sex drive for which Pauline and Napoleon were both renowned,” and for “their mutual affection” and “clannish affinity,” as well as their blasé attitude toward their sexual conquests. Not only that, coming from Corsica where intermarriage among relatives was common, they had a different cultural outlook on incest.

Whether or not it was true that they were lovers, Pauline loved to shock and titillate people, and flaunted her closeness to the emperor and the odd sort of power that she alone of all her siblings wielded over the most powerful man on earth.

What do you think about cameos?

During a conversation about influential jewelry throughout the times, (with another nit-picker-history-crazed-type friend), the subject of Cameos came up. What is it about these miniature carvings embedded in beatiful settings that keep resurfacing?

We know that cameos have been around forever (as early as 30 BC for sure) -As for the 18thc though...guess who apparently was responsible for making them fashionable again? ...You got it...Josephine, of course! Apparently she loved cameos and set forth a trend for ladies (and gents) to become quite proud of wearing mini replicas of themselves.

And knowing the empress' trademark for having exquisite (and exorbitant) taste, there's no doubt that she certainly could have been the one to reset the stage for cameo jewelry. Take a look at this to die-for cameo parure:

As for Napoleon, his own coronation crown is filled with them (named it Charlemagne's crown) as well.

Now, was this Josephine's creative recommendation? (Does anyone know?)

Christine Trent has done it again!

She has written a delicious novel based on a fictional heroine whose life runs parallel to a real historical figure, in a real historical timeframe while using real historical facts. Not only that, once again like in her first novel, The Queen's Dollmaker, I was highly entertained by this no-nonsense heroine. In “A Royal Likeness”, Marguerite, is a gutsy, creative and talented lady with a thirst for adventure and curiosity to no end (Just love reading about these kinds of women).

Many of you will remember Marguerite as Claudette's niece in Trent’s first novel, The Queen's Dollmaker. In this subsequent novel, Marguerite has now taken over the doll making business. After a horrible tragedy (I won’t spoil it for you), Marguerite moves on to work for Madame Tussaud- Yes! The very own Madame Tussaud (who also happened to be a good friend of her aunt, Claudette, during the time of Marie-Antoinette- Read my review of the Queen’s Dollmaker here;) There, she learns the art of making figures out of wax. But there is sooo much more to the story...

Throughout the book we meet several royal personages; we get a glimpse of Tussaud’s life and history; there’s an important historical battle; life on a war ship; mystery, tragedy, and, of course...love!

I found this book to be very entertaining with the right dose of history meshed in to keep pace with the time period; hence giving it the feeling it could have actually happened for real. I find this author’s technique of paralleling her main heroine to history and historical figures without sacrificing the story she wants to write, especially refreshing.

There are already innumerable books out there rehashing history with an interesting twist of fiction that are wonderful to read (hence our love for Historical fiction!)...Yet, Christine Trent stands out from the rest by crafting in her own style; one which hooks historical buffs by sustaining us with just enough historical immersion within the plot while fulfilling us with her own great story. Bravo to this creative author with a deliciously original edge!

Christine Trent has definitely made her mark- In my opinion; I dare nickname her a modern-day Heyer!

Reminiscing Verona on Valentine's Day...

Happy Valentine's Day!

On this day of love, I can't help but think of Romeo and Giulietta..and Verona, of course!

Was just there this past summer- and have taken some pictures there...but due to so many constraints, I've just never had the time to post any of them. So, today seems like the perfect day for reminiscing about love in the city of the world-famous lovers...Verona! I had a wonderful time going through the tiny streets of Verona and getting a glimpse of what it might have been like.

the place hasn't changed much from when I visited regularly during my childhood days (except it's way more crowded!) Giulietta's house is kept quite well, and although there's not much left to see of what's inside the house, here are a few of the shots I was able to take (as you'll note; not much to say about my photography skills...but hey! It's the memory that counts!)

Book Review: Desiree: The Bestselling Novel of Napoleon's first Love

Annemarie Selinko's last novel: Desiree has become my top favourite 18th c HF read- without a doubt. The story of Eugenie Desiree Clary, Napoleon Bonaparte's first love is in my opinion one of the best novels ever written pertaining to the Revolution era- in terms of history, romance, historical characters, and impeccable writing style. This book kept me captivated from beginning to end. And- the funny thing is that I read this intermittently due to other priorities, so I naturally thought I'd for sure lose momentum and interest. This never happened and when I finally finished the book, I almost felt the parting sadness when losing a dear friend.

The story begins with Desiree writing the story of her life through a journal given to her by her father, prior to his death. The daughter of a fabric merchant, Desiree, was unpretentious, straight forward and incredibly brave and loyal in love, honour, friendship and family. Her strength of character (even when she didn't feel quite up to it...) was incredible. From the very beginning we can see her determination when it came to saving the raggedy young Napoleon at the beginning of his career. I loved reading about their romance and meager beginnings...all the short way upto his unfaithfulness and hurtful betrayal to leave Desiree for Josephine. This though, would not be the end of their encounters.

Throughout their lives, Desiree would always play an important role in Napoleon's life-not amorously, but with extended family and politically. Her attachment to the Bonaparte family, by the marriage of Napoleon's brother to Desiree's sister- and politically through her husband's (Bernardotte) importance (he first fought along Bonaparte's side and then became the King of Sweden). The history is impeccable and the story told with the perfect blend of simplicity and grandiose royal style (yes, it's possible).

I loved that Desiree's life entertwined Josephine's and her family- along with all the Bonaparte's and other significant historical characters (Fouche, for one). The novel takes us through their lives as well, giving a different perspective- and not just passing glimpses. But, most definitely, what I loved the most was the way Desiree always stood up to Napoleon. We encounter moments of truthful courage where Desiree speaks her opinion frankly and keeps her head high- even though she is terrified inside...others would have surely perished at the hands of Bonaparte for this behaviour- but not Desiree. This too showed us a side of Napoleon that remained loyal and respectful of the bond and young love they once shared. The book is filled with precious moments.

And what more of this brave girl...Desiree becomes part of Royalty herself; so for those who don't really know that part of history, I won't spoil it for you. I could go on forever about this book: Desire's regular-girl-achieving-great-things personality, her love for her husband, the King of Sweden, Bonaparte's wins and defeats, Josephine's other side, the Bonaparte family, Desiree's business and Royal side, the losses, the pain, the trials and triumphs and some of the funniest moments as well...It's all just too good.

Desiree is a spectacular book, and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Book Review: Prisoners in the Palace

Prisoners in The Palace, by Michaela MacColl

Prisoners in The Palace, is about the life of Young Victoria through the eyes of Liza Hastings; her lady-in-waiting, confidante, friend and young schemer supreme. This delicious YA novel takes on a tour of Victoria’s inner secrets, fears, struggles, love and ascension to the throne.

The story begins with the orphaned teen Liza Hastings- a noble born young lady whose family fortune is completely depleted. She needs to work to support herself and so off she goes to Court. Starting at the bottom of the scale, Liza, whose knowledge of languages (especially German) wins her top position as lady-in-waiting to the young Victoria.

The tale takes us through awakening moments for Victoria where she realizes that she is being held back and treated unfairly by her mother and the awful Sir John (advisor and...a bit more than that to the Duchess- Victoria’s mom). Liza helps Victoria ‘grow up’ by showing her glimpses of what life is like on the outside. Liza also helps sensitize and humble her towards those less fortunate.

This book is an easy read and extremely entertaining. Although I laughed through many of the schemes, in many parts I also felt the hurt for those abused and used by Sir John. Many of the scenes were vividly described and the feelings and emotions of not only Victoria, but her beloved Baroness and those who came through the Princess’ path seemed true to life. Many times I caught myself believing that Liza’s story was real...and wishing it really was.

Michaela MacColl writes an entertaining novel that touches historical facts meshed with fantasy. This book is sure to delight the younger reader who will no doubt be led to read more about this fascinating queen.

Writing, Reviewing, History, Art and more...We're back!

Glad to be back after what seemed like a never ending roller-coaster that had life spinning in all kinds of directions. Prayer is HUGE and I will never stop believing in miracles. Health is everything; love is the most powerful tool, and, life is a blessing.

As for reading...well, that sure did take close to last place in my realm of priorities. Nonetheless, I did manage a couple of books and will be posting reviews soon. Look out for one on Victoria, another Plaidy and an Angelique as well.

But I have to admit that not all things were drenched in misery...I actually got away for three weeks this summer to my well-beloved Venice and the Veneto region (hope to post photos of that as well:)

I missed this place- I hear my muse calling...Hey Josephine, I’m back!

Book Review: THE COUNTESS AND THE KING...Plus Giveaway!!!

What is it about Susan Holloway Scott that makes her one of my top three FAVOURITE authors? Well, all you have to do is get out there and pick up her latest historical novel: The Countess and The King- and you'll understand exactly what I mean.

Want to read a book that reveals 17th c history set in Charles II's English Court, filled with illustrious details of court life filled with historical precision along with love and the times (not to mention the glorious descriptions of setting and costume)- then RUN to get this!

By now most of you know how much I adore reading anything that has to do with Charles II, so imagine my thrill when I began reading the story of Katherine Sedley, James II' mistress. I never really heard much about her until now and I'm glad to say that this novel added another dimension to what I already knew about this grand court.

Katherine Sedley was no regular lady (especially by 17th c standards!) Not only did she not fit in in terms of beauty (too thin and rather homely for the times), she also spoke what was on her (witty) mind- and what came out was usually accompanied by swearing! Yet, she was of the nobility and her father (a politically involved playwright) was in Charles II's immediate circle...making Katherine by no means an ordinary or invisible lady.

Against her father's will, she refused to be bound in marriage and had no real aspirations for love (having been disillusioned and often mocked for her meager looks). How could she ever expect The Duke of York- future King James II to fall madly in love with her? Impossible- yet true! The poor Catholic King-to-be was completely mesmerized by this Protestant temptress. The powerful counsel of Catholic priests strongly advised James against this temptation; all the while making Katherine all the more seductive to his eyes...The King could in no way abstain from Katherine's lure.

Yet, Katherine Sedley was not the type to make demands on James- nor did she ever assume to be granted any favouritism by others- nor did she allude to the sort of grandiosity that other Grand mistresses (such as Louise de Keroualle- King Charles' favourite)...with Katherine it was always 'what you see is what you get'. Her love for James was real and she stood tall in her convictions and loyalty to England. A doting mother, a loving companion (lusty too- but written in such good taste!), Katherine remained steadfast to her English pride and would not be swayed from her own religion. Convinced that James was being brain-washed by his priests (her own mother's experience could not shake Katherine's conviction or disdain about this)-despite this, she never attempted to convert him to her own beliefs (but neither he, to his).

A tempestuous political time where Catholics and Protestants fought for idealism and restoration in England- the Countess and The King is a delicious read for anyone interested not only in the love story itself, but also in the politics and religious conflicts of the times.

I must say that this is a superb novel which will leave you completely satisfied in terms of history, historical figures in accurate detail, love story, entertainment (you've never met such an outspoken character as Katherine Sedley!) splendour of the court, perceptions and deceptions and- ultimately, the sadness that eventually befalls this type of love that is never quite meant to be.

I LOVED this book.

Dressing a Royal Bridegroom

One of the most pleasurable aspects of writing historical fiction is getting to describing the clothing of the characters. It’s not just being able to indulge in imaginary excess, though who doesn’t like to picture themselves in full court dress, appearing before an awestruck crowd in rustling silk and exuberant lace, hair piled high with jewels glittering, well, everywhere?

But clothing can also reveal a great deal about a character, about whether he or she likes to make a splashy entrance in the latest French fashion, or prefers more subdued dress. I’ve always been fascinated by how Charles II (1630-1685), the English king who has featured prominently in many of my books, chose to dress. For grand state occasions, he could work the ermine, velvet, and crown with the best of them, but for everyday he preferred to be comfortable rather than stylish, and dressed in dark colors with a minimum of the lace and ribbon that was the latest French fashion. Everything was the best quality, of course, because he was the king, but often the only ornament that set him apart as the monarch was the Garter Star beautifully embroidered on the breast of his coats.

The other gentlemen and ladies of Charles’s court were much more interested in displaying their finery, and spent outrageous amounts on jewels and clothes. Wrote one courtier after a ball in 1666: “Never saw greater bravery…a hundred vests that at the least cost a hundred pounds. Some adorned with jewels worth above a thousand…and the ladies much richer than the men….the gloriousest assembly.” And this in a time when an average English tradesman and his family could live well on forty-five pounds a year –– not to mention that all of this “gloriousest” display took place less than three months after a large part of London had been destroyed in the Great Fire!

But reading these descriptions can be frustrating since there are surprisingly few pictures to back them up. Gentlemen tended to pose for portraits in their formal dress for solemn court events rather than their newest party-clothes from Paris, while the ladies sat in draped “costumes” provided by the artist, loose-fitting robes of bright silk clasped in strategic places that were supposed to feel vaguely antique and romantic. Seductive, yes, but not at all indicative of what these same great ladies wore to impress on a daily basis. There are even fewer examples of actual gowns from the late 17th c. in museum collections.

Katherine Sedley, the heroine of my new historical novel, The Countess and the King, was a wealthy heiress who liked extravagant, showy gowns with plenty of costly jewels, partly to distract attention from her unfashionable thinness, and partly just because she liked being the center of attention. But though there are plenty of references to her gaudy taste, there are no surviving examples of it. Instead the most famous portrait by Godrey Kneller from her heyday as a royal mistress shows her in admirable, if uncharacteristic, restraint in artist’s “undress.” And so,with Katherine, I had to combine my own imagination with contemporary accounts and fashion plates, and hope I captured her “personal style.”

But with James, I was amazingly lucky. The embroidered suit that James wore to his second wedding miraculously still exists, and is on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. This suit has its own story to tell. James had it made for his wedding to his second wife in the winter of 1673, and like all royal weddings of the time, it was a political alliance, not a love match. The bride was a fifteen-year-old Italian princess, Mary Beatrice (her name already anglicized) of Modena. She was also Roman Catholic, and because James himself had recently converted to that faith as well, the wedding was wildly unpopular in Protestant England. In protest the princess was burned in straw effigies in London, as was James. A proxy wedding had already taken place in Modena, but the first time the couple were to meet would be when Mary Beatrice landed in Dover. Given England’s hostility, it was decided that the two should be wed in Dover, as quickly and quietly as possible.

Thus James’s suit was made of grey wool broadcloth to keep him warm as he stood on the winter beach. But the lining was a festive, bright coral ribbed silk, and nearly every inch of the grey wool is covered with (now faded) gold and silver embroidery, including the Garter Star on the left breast. The embroidery design features intertwining lilies and honeysuckles, signifying purity and devoted love, both theoretically appropriate for a bridegroom, if not for James. The suit’s cut is the latest French fashion, and the style of the flopping oversized cuffs on the coat was called “hound’s-ears.” There are dozens of tiny decorative buttons, each wrapped in more gold thread; James’s wardrobe records show that he required 228 buttons for a complete suit of coat, waistcoat, and breeches!

Alas, there is no surviving portrait of James in this suit, but it is easy to imagine him standing on the beach wearing it to greet his bride, the winter sun glinting on all that metallic embroidery. He wore the suit to their hasty marriage by the Bishop of Oxford in a private house in Dover, and again several days later when the newlyweds arrived at the palace in London, and James presented Mary Beatrice to his brother the king.

What was the Mary Beatrice’s reaction to her well-dressed bridegroom? Exhausted from sea-sickness and her long journey, she reportedly took one look at James and burst into tears. But what did Katherine Sedley make of the beautiful suit and the man wearing it when she stood among the curious courtiers at Whitehall Palace later that week? Ah, you’ll have to read The Countess and the King to find out.

Book Review; Georgette Heyer’s Regency World by Jennifer Kloester

Georgette Heyer’s Regency World by Jennifer Kloester is by far one of the best regency resource books I’ve read upto date. Pelisses, bonnets, hairstyles and so much more, Georgette Heyer’s Regency World was a delightful read as well as an incredibly informational haven . There are two whole pages on rules and etiquette to portray the guidelines that men and women used to comport themselves accordingly. Some of these sounded completely absurd…but having read a few Heyers, I could totally picture this.

For instance: ‘A lady could ride a horse and even hunt as long as she was correctly attired and rode side-saddle’. And the line immediately after that says: ‘Galloping in Hyde Park was prohibited.’

And although I don’t get this (I truly wonder how they possibly managed this), can you believe that: ‘ At a formal dinner one did not talk across the dinner table but confined conversation to those on one’s left and right’.!!

The last chapter was my favourite. I just loved the “who’s who in the Regency’ section with details on George III right upto Edward Hughes. The details and reference are precious. The appendixes with detailed glossary, newspapers and magazines of the times, a list of Heyer books and a timeline- are all wonderfully practical and entertaining. I feel so much more Heyer- Regency- learned now!

I strongly recommend this most informative easy read that’s entertaining as well as historical, and will no doubt bring great pleasure to all Regency lovers. Loved it!

This book is about special undiscovered princesses. They hid them so well, that no one has any research on them and no information at all. These princesses all have weird things that no one would think a princess could have. For example, Princess Hot Head, instead of needlepointing, she likes to sharpen her swords and spits on the ground and challenges everyone to arm wrestling matches.

My favourite princess is Princess Babbling Brook. No one wants to marry her cause she talks too much. She’s terrible for conversation. She’s very funny and original and she reminds me alot of myself, cause I talk alot. I also liked Princess Buffet because she takes alot of space in a room, and the funny part is she’s the best party planner and is great against bullies.

I love this book and I think it’s great for girls my age to read this. The pictures are really colourful.

I think it’s really a different kind of book and I like it so much I give it 5 castles.

Mom’s thoughts:

What a refreshing take on what a ‘princess’ can be! These wonderfully illustrated (seriously, the illustrations are bright, dreamy and almost playful looking- breaththakingly artistic)- portraying the princesses as different as can be. Every little girl can picture herself having one of these ‘not so perfect’ characteristics, which actually are what make the princesses special.

Very original, funny, creative and a realistic look at fantasy. Makes being a princess in your own right a true possibility for every little girl.

Book Review: The King's Mistress

The King's Mistress, by Emma Campion

Extremely well written, prose-like, The King's Mistress is the story of Alice Perrers. Taking place in 14th century England, the young Alice is married off at the tender age of fourteen to the dashing Janyn, a descendant of Lombard merchants, who carries with him a royal intrigue laced in scandal involving Isabella of France and her late lover, Mortimer...The secret trickles down to the royal family's ultimate secret and Alice, unaware of it all pays the price of living a life pupettered by others.

As the title suggests, Alice obviously becomes King Edward III's (son of Isabella of France and the late King Edward II) mistresss; but this only happens after the death of her husband Janyn. (It's to be noted that Alice is completely loyal in her relationships). Alice and the King fall madly in love and she is subserviant and loving to the very end. Without going through the whole summary of the book (which is hefty and detailed to the max), in every story there is a villain and in this case it's William of Windsor who is guilty of destroying Alice's life. He announces himself as her betrothed and plants the seed of mistrust that sows evil and gossip throughout the realm; Alice is hated and blamed for all that goes wrong (even the king at times is doubtful). Needless to say, Alice endures it all. Fortunately for her, the King is completely enamoured of her and also acknowledges the children she bears him.

I rather enjoyed this story that spoke a different tale of Alice (the little I knew of her painted a sad picture of a ravenous and selfish woman who bewitched the king)- so I'm glad I got to see this side of her instead. I particularly enjoyed reading about Geoffrey Chaucer as being a good friend of hers. At the beginning of every chapter there are verses written by him and this makes the book particularly more characteristic of the time.

Beautifully written, the story reads like a memoir with almost to the minute details that, although I enjoyed the book, I must say that at times it felt very long. Other than that, a beautiful story all around.

How To Mellify a Corpse (And Other Human Stories of Ancient Science & Superstition), by Vicky Leon

History, mythology, science, cosmetology, superstition...This book’s got it all! This was my first time reading a book by Vicky Leon- and- I swear it won’t be the last!

I had no idea what I would be getting from a book with a title as unusual as this one. I was almost afraid it might be too scientifically morbid, or maybe too technical...WOW- I couldn’t have been more off!

This is a FANTASTIC book! How To Mellify a Corpse is definitely the most fascinating and (yes) exciting history read ever.

Just released today, this tiny 7” x 7”, 300 page book is filled to the rim with stuff I had never even heard about. So at this point, I must give you some examples of shocking truths I was unaware of...For one, lead was the ‘in thing of the day- they used it for almost everything; from sweetener (gasp!) to fermenting agent, to cosmetics and dental work too (shocked!). Also, I finally got to learn the origin of the ‘evil eye’ myth and who might be most susceptible. Last, but in no way least, the connection between honey, mollifying and Alexander The Great, finally clicked- unbelievable stuff!

There is so much material covered in this book that will keep you glued (pun;) and completely awestruck. A cross between senseless ideas that made so much sense; to the simplest of creations that breathe pure genius, How To Mellify a Corpse makes reading about ancient history fun and entertaining. Vicky Leon’s history knowledge is impressive as well as immeasurable. Backed by an incredible amount of research and accuracy, How to Mellify a Corpse offers an ocean of historical information that’s actually a blast to read!

I highly recommend this book and am bumping it way up my list of most favourite non-fiction reads.

I now look forward to reading another of Leon’s top notch books: Uppity women of The Renaissance (I can’t imagine what concoctions they were upto!)

Entertaining, Fascinating, Original and Educational as well ... I am so impressed with how good this book is!

I have been excited about this book’s release ever since I first read mention of it on Delors’ Versailles and More blog, awhile back. What could be more appealing to me than a book set in France during the Revolution- with a sneak peak at both Josephine and Bonaparte, and involving characters such as Fouché- well-Obviously I couldn’t wait to devour this!

I was ready to escape to a time filled with intriguing history, some romance...the usual? No way! This one involves a full-fledged mystery to boot! I was delighted by this unexpectedly captivating ride! Chief Inspector Miquel Roch is on a mission to uncover the truth behind the resulting massacre in the attempt to blow away First Consul himself, Bonaparte. Who masterminded this failed operation? The suspects are on the run, but the clues are numerous. One mystery person works behind the scene to help move the whole operation forward...For The King....

Jacobites, Chouans, Royalists- typically anyone of these groups would have had motive to want do away with Napoloen, the Usurper...This is a mystery with more at stake than Inspector Roch could have ever imagined; For one, his father’s life depends on it.

Truth be told, no matter how good the mystery, I always need a heroine in my stories to keep me hooked. And so, just to make it that more appealing, For The King, has a variety of entertaining French ladies; especially, one particularly tempting Blanche, who happens to be keeper of quite a few heartbeats...literally.

For The King is an intriguing tale spun around actual history. The time frame, setting, plotted assassination, the accused, as well as many of the characters encountered in this read- all real. This made the story that more attractive to me. Delors’ attention to detail and impeccable historical accuracy is remarkable. I was truly delighted to embark in this unexpected mystery that fulfilled more than the promise of another entertaining French historical fiction.

If you are fascinated by the French Revolution and the tumultuous changes of the times, you will absolutely want to read this- it's so interesting! Splendid!

Book Review: THE PENDANT, by Mirella Patzer

With the summer heat already upon us here, I thought I’d take a break from my usual historical reads to something slightly different while still set within the delicious past. I indulged in an historical romance where the setting and period brought me back in history without the worries of historical accuracy of real events or people. I didn’t want to be bogged down in any way- except for pure pleasure reading. And- if the story could be one set in Italy- then what could be more perfect for me?

In Mirella Patzer’s, The Pendant, I got all that and more! Set in medieval Genoa, this is the story of Countess Morena, (last living heir of Umberto Monterossa) and her abducting(in a good way, believe it or not) beau, Amoro, Duke of Genoa. Sure this is a story of a grand romance, but within it all, there is a quest for a treasure, a mysterious pendant, a rival-brute, abductions, marriage by force, a conniving temptress, atrocious situations (most of which involve torture), murder, heart wrenching moments, and yes, lots of love (involving hot passion...).

Not only is Patzer’swriting style exquisite, the plot to this story is fantastic! Patzer knows how to weave a tale that will keep you guessing. Of course, when romance is involved, one usually knows where the story is headed- but in this case, due to the high level of adrenaline and excitement, I was often caught off-guard, and entertained from beginning to end. I must admit, that even some of the more gruesome situations kept me hooked so that I could find relief in the transition of the outcome revealed. This was a true surprise for me, because honestly, I’m really not one to stomach graphics of any kind- and there’s a bit more sex than I was prepared for - YET; all that is quite secondary in relation to how fascinating the storyline really is.

Countess Morena is not your regular frail, romance beauty; and Duke Amoro is not your typical tall-dark- handsome- win’em all kind of royal. The trials and tribulations at the hands of the horrid Ernesto, saw our main characters live through defeat, humiliation and more, in the name of love and loyalty. There’s so much detail in this story that I believe touches relevant issues that also apply in the lives of today’s women, in terms of gender equality, morals and virtue, choices and more...In other words there’s alot to ponder here. In its intensity, The Pendant locks a whole realm of substance and content within heartfelt romance.

Deeper than I thought- I really enjoyed this.

Today, I have another review for The ABC in History Challenge hosted by Marg at Historical Tapestry.

Have I mentioned how much I love this challenge? Well the reason I like it so much is because first of all it's easy to play along; all I have to do is look up one of my past reviews or books I'm presently reading, and then just write a post about it. But the next best thing is that I get to go back and relish these books. By reading over my review and going back to browse the book, I get right bak into it flipping pages to my favourite parts...like going down memory lane if you will;) I've been so busy lately that I've sort of passed on posting a couple of letters- but couldn't be kept away forever so I'm back today for:

And the book I chose today is one I really loved by favourite author Sandra Gulland.

Mistress of The Sun, by Sandra Gulland

Gulland writes a splendid story about Louise de Lavallière and Louis XIV (my favourite French king!)- romance, superstition, intrigue, deception, loyalty and faith- plus so much more in this one. Louise's tender love and total devotion to the Sun King wrenched my heart. The whole essence of this book is magical and their love too wonderful to be true...This is a book that always stands out for me when I think about any part of Louis's life and the books written about him. Loved it.

Book Review: No Will But His...

No Will But His, Sarah A. Hoyt

Just when I thought I’d read it all and had my fill on Kathryn Howard, comes a book to rekindle my heart. No Will But His, the title of this sublime read, was also Kathryn’s chosen motto... it couldn’t have been more perfect. Kathryn definitely had no say, from beginning to end- and that’s not only where Henry was concerned; Kathryn indulged everyone.

Caring too much about others while forsaking herself along the way, Kathryn dared not hurt or disappoint. Hoyt captures this essence completely, and I for one, am thankful for this most accurate and genuine portrayal of this sadly and misused, puppet queen.

Too many books have capitalized on making the young queen appear overly sexed, flighty, non-caring and downright stupid (these are probably the same people who’ve wrongly slotted Ann Boleyn as well). If you’re a Tudor buff, you know what I mean. Hoyt went the extra mile to really bring out Kathryn’s caring nature and almost self-sacrificial way to be.

What generally comes off as not too deep and rather silly, is in this book revealed as something that goes way deeper. There was much thought and reason brewing in that pretty head, and for the most of it, the conclusions sought were brought forth by the heart- and her fear.

True, Kathryn’s choices ultimately contributed to her tragedy, but when you consider the options...Giving Henry an heir would have solved everything- or so she thought.

The unravelling of her life through a fabrication of gossip would ultimately destroy her reputation and undo her totally. Her word, as much as her tragic death, meant nothing to no one.

For those who would love to get a feel for what Kathryn’s life was like prior to Henry, this book indulges the reader mostly in this part of her life. It’s only in the latter part of the book that Henry shows up for a brief time (very short marriage indeed...)

To understand how transparently genuine, innocent and harmless, this young queen really was, all you need to do is read the part when she meets Anne of Cleves...Her acceptance of the former queen is sublimely humble and quite touching- I loved that part.

Calling all Tudor buffs: You’ll enjoy No Will But His- for sure!

Book Review: THE QUEEN'S PAWN...

The Queen’s Pawn, by Christy English

What an incredibly different and refreshing take on the grand Queen Eleanor! This was the first time that I read anything in such detail about Eleanor that revolved around her life and that of Alais, the French Princess (daughter of King Louis- Eleanor’s first husband). Written in interchanging points of views, Eleanor’s and Alais’ personalities came through as though I were hearing their actual voice.

Not only do the style and language flow beautifully, the writing morphs reflective of Eleanor’s courts of love– this in itself is truly creative on English’s part. There’s almost a poetic flow to the thoughts and words making the dialogs truly reflective of the times. Sensuous and descriptive, the language helped set the mood for this exquisite read.

As for the ladies themselves...this is one book that gets you right into their psyche. I was amazed to read about Eleanor in this new light. Don’t get me wrong, Eleanor’s strength and scheming mind is present throughout and never diminished-what was different for me was to read about her genuine love for Alais; a daughter she loved as her own. Alais reciprocated this love in her own hungry way-Eleanor was her life- the mother she never had.

This was definitely Eleanor in a new role for that major historical period. Christy English focused mostly on what was happening ‘behind the scenes’- the reasons as to why the major historical figures might have reacted the way they did if circumstances had presented themselves in this way. By slightly altering the dates and consequently the meetings and relationship occurrences, English re-created an intense story of love, loyalty, and innocence versus revenge, to finally meet truce for an everlasting bond.

There's also something to say abut the liaisons between the ladies and the main gents in this story; King Henry and Richard (Eleanor's favorite son). I loved reading about innocent love transformed into an about-face passion that caught me completely off guard. To what extent would Alais give of herself to love? To what extent would Eleanor go to insure the love remains hers (with all angles covered)? Intricate indeed and sublimely well plotted- Bravo Christy English!

Ultimately, The Queen’s Pawn succeeded in reinforcing my admiration for Eleanor and elevating her to an even higher status (something I thought had reached its peak awhile ago). As for Alais, here was a young woman that could stand her own; having learned the ropes from the very best- Eleanor. But although I learned so much more about Alais, and recognized her hardship and almost sacrificial youth with something more to offer, her strengths could never come close to Aquitaine’s Queen. Eleanor is regal throughout this book. She is unforgettable, unattainable and unmistakably supreme.

Loved it!

For this last day of Queen Victoria Long Weekend Binge, I have a fun Book Review for you:) Have you read: What the Victorians Didn`t Do for Us...A Collection of Their Useless Advice

This book is a blast! It`s a quick, fun read that describes some of the strangest things the Victorians thought up, or implemented to get by their everyday lives.
They used charcola as a teeth whitener and when their teeth got really bad they bought tetth from those who sold theirs to get by. Victorian wome wore as many as twelve items at a time. The corsets women wore were so restrictive that they swooned quite often- so rather than stay home for being so delicate, they simply had a rib removed!

There are so many strange things in this book varying from areas of domestic functions, foreign affairs, social graces, curious cures- just to m=name a few. I loved this little book (a mere 126 pages) for its most interesting look at the ways of the Victorians- so much info! And after reading this, even though I love Victoria, I have to agree that not all that`s often good necessarily stems from the Victorian times!

This is such a precious book! It`s filled with letters, photographs with handwritten mementos, theatre stubs-In a few words: it breathes with Victorian life. If you are interested in reading this type of beautiful memoir- this is the book for you!

Queen Victoria`s Love of the Arts (Day 3!)

It`s day 3 of the Queen Victoria Long Weekend! Sorry I didn`t post earlier...it`s been a scorching hot day here in Montreal and we`ve been soaking up the sun and Barbecuing and feasting!

Today`s post is mainly about Victoria and Albert`s love of the Arts. It`s no secret that the Royal couple indulged in the arts; whether it was music, poetry, painting or the theatre.

This month, I came across a copy of the magazine, Roylty (which I love!) And found a whole section on Victoria`s love of the arts..Notice the black circled section on the right for the title..

So, I scanned a few of the photos for you. Here`s one of Victoria`s own self portrait (she loved to draw and sketch- she was actually pretty good) Check it out:

Here`s one of of the royal family- I simply adore this one!

This next one is a portrait of Prince Albert (what a distinguished and classy guy- my opinion!)

And this last one was Albert`s favourite painting of Victoria (and I don`t blame him!) Look at how deliciously gorgeous she was!

And now, here`s my own humble attempt at interpreting the above fabulous portrait.(I just love Victoria- and had to draw her:)

And guess what! My honey bunch of a daughter, Sophia (you remember her- the one who loves history just like her mommy?) Well, she attempted to draw Victoria as well! I find she`s actually quite good (Proud mommy- can you tell?)

Day 2 of the Queen Victoria Long Weekend!!!

Happy Saturday Everyone! The Festivity Posts for Queen Victoria continue here on EBJ! For those of you who have just joined us today, you`re not too late! This event (which began yesterday), will go on until Monday the 24th- Queen Victoria`s Birthday! Here in Canada, it`s a long 4-day weekend in celebration of our past grand monarch. BOOK REVIEW:

I recently was given the privilege of borrowing a very old but beautiful copy of : QUEEN VICTORIA. HER GIRLHOOD AND WOMANHOOD, BY GRACE GREENWOOD. After reading it with the utmost care (seriously, because it wasn’t mine, I feared if anything should happen to it- yep- that precious and antique!)- only after did I discover that I could have actually read it on the Gutenberg Project! This beautifully written biography tells the story of Queen Victoria, her family, her life, studies, love of the arts, the famous people she met, the politics, her endless love for Albert (reciprocated of course;)...It is an absolutely divine read.

I think what I loved most was reading the descriptions of the Queen as a young child all the way through to young adulthood. She had the kindest disposition and was such a caring person. It seems that everyone adored her. Reading about her affinity for the arts and her love of animals reflected her gentle character. I loved reading about her mannerisms and the way she dealt with others. Of course, her relationship with Prince Albert was the kind that fairy tales are made of- and that suited me just fine as well.

There’s even a part where she entertains Napoleon III and his wife, Empress Eugenie (whom I happen to adore). The Queen and the Empress really seemed to hit it off- both with such endearing personalities, I could really picture the two of them together. When in turn the English Royal Couple visited their French counterparts, it is said that they had a grand time; they enjoyed eachother’s company so much that the Empress cried when parted.

The book ties in the history in such a splendid way by sweeping us through the lives of this royal branch (from George III and on). I loved reading little anecdotes on the family dynamics and peculiarities of these historical royals.

But the saddest part was certainly Albert’s death- and with this the part where Victoria, with such sorrow, realizes “There will be no one to ever call me Victoria again”.

If you get the chance read this splendid history book on Queen Victoria- you will love it.
